Snitching, revenue streams in a depressed economy

Ok, I am chilling doing my Sunday thing, answering email, planning strategies with my bp for a new business venture and of course blogging, when I read an article on the NY Times site that flabbergasts me. Crime reporting has tremendously spiked in the weakened economy. People have begun to look at rewards from turning in crooks as supplemental income. I know that I will date myself with this one, but does this mean that we will have a "Citizens On Patrol" unit like in Police Academy??? The media doesn't help at all continously feeding certain stereotypes for crime. Just so everyone knows that I am African American and I am stating for the record, I am not so broke that I am going out to commit a crime to pay bills or retaliate against some one. So if theangryblaqman.com ceases operation for no apparent reason, please call the Fulton County jail and post my bail. See link below....

I'm a little confused by this post. What was it about the article that flabbergasted you? You used the word "snitching" in the title--is there something wrong with telling the police or a tip line about a crime you witnessed? If my house was burgled and someone saw something, I'd certainly want them to "snitch." Maybe crime rate variations between neighborhoods have less to do with race or poverty than the attitude that working with the police to solve crimes committed against your own neighbors is somehow wrong.

The saddest thing about the article to me is that so many people were only willing to help reduce crime in their own neighborhoods because of a tip reward.
